Page / Design
- What exactly do you do?
- XHTMLization covers all XHTML, CSS and some JavaScript. This includes CSS drop-downs, link hover
effects and basic JavaScript. If you need some advanced JavaScript please get in touch and we can provide you with a quote.
- What counts as a page or a design?
- Any page where the layout or content is different counts as a page or design. You can either get us
to convert all your websites pages, or you can get the main 'template' changes converted and build out
the rest of the pages from the templates yourself.
- I have an extremely complex page - multiple overlapping backgrounds, transparent images, complicated layout - the works. Still count as one page?
- If we do receive a design which will require a lot of dedication to convert we'll get in touch with you right away and let you know. In such cases we may ask for a surcharge to convert such a design depending on the design complexity.
- Do you do back-end engineering as well or just markup?
- Our focus is on markup (CSS XHTML). This does include some JavaScript, but it does not include back-end scripting (PHP, Ruby on Rails, ASP,NET, Perl, etc) or database work (SQL, Oracle, etc). We'll work with your in-house programming team, a third party, or recommend one of our trusted technology partners to create a backend solution.
- Do you do any Flash or ActionScript work?
- We used sIFR which is utilizes Flash, however we don't provide any Flash development services. If you have Flash movies you want on your page please send them (or placeholders) with your order and we can embed them in the code using the web standards compliant method of Javascript.
- Do you do design work?
- XHTMLized orders do not include any design work. However we are just as passionate about beautiful design as we are about beautiful code. If you'd like a design of any type please get in touch as we love to flex our creative muscles. We specialize in providing simple and memorable experiences. At some stage we will be launching our design service Mockingboard.
- Do you provide web site promotion and search engine optimization?
- We optimize your markup to ensure it's friendly for search engines. This does not include:
- Search engine submission
- Link building
- Keyword content writing
If you need these additional services please email us.
- My 'page' has content which changes with AJAX? Does this count as 1 page?
- This depends on the actual design. If the changing content is significantly different than we would count it as a separate page. To be sure, please email in the design first.
- Is there a discount for multiple pages?
- Yes. The more pages you have, the larger the discount. Pages must be from the same project.
- Can I send in one page now and the rest of the pages later?
- Yes. You don't need to send in all the pages when you first place an order. However, to take advantage of the discount received by ordering multiple pages, you must specify the expected total number of pages on your initial order.
- Do we specify which parts of the design will have things like: AJAX functionality, Flash movies, expandable DIVs, or do you cut up things arbitrarily?
- Yes. Please provide information on how your design should work and what elements it's composed of so we can make sure it's marked up appropriately for your purpose.
- I've had my design converted by another agency but I'm not happy. Can you fix the code?
- Yes. You can ZIP up and send in existing markup which needs some tender loving care. This is a popular option for moving from tables based designs.
What to send?
- What information should I provide with my order?
- The more information you provide the better. Some things you might want to considering sending in with your order include the following:
- Source file of the design you want converted. See below for the various formats this can be supplied in.
- Flattened image of how you want the page to look. This is important to make sure there are not some additional layers in the source files which might be turned off.
- Description of any requirements. On the final form there is a spot to fill in any specific requirements however you may also want to consider having adding an extra layer in the source file to provide more details.
- Fonts if you're using custom fonts and you haven't traced the outlines of the fonts we'll need the actual font files to to display the image correctly. This is essential if you would like us to use the sIRF technique.
- How should I provide the source files?
- If possible we prefer to receive layered Photoshop PSD files. This mean that the elements are maintained on layers rather than flattened together. Please clean up the layers in the file so it's clear to us how the design should look. We can work with a wide variety of file types including:
- Fireworks PNG files
- Illustrator AI files
- Existing HTML which needs fixing
- Flattened images such as JPGS, TIFFs and PNG files
- PDF files
- Powerpoint files (if you want wireframes done)
- How about standard navigation implementations such as drop-down menus, expanding menus, etc. Are they included?
- Yes. These are included as part of the price.
- I have a drop down menu / hover effects / etc for the design. How do I include this?
- Having a separate layer in the source file is the best way to include information about dynamic elements. An exported flattened image showing the other state in also useful for us. It's also helpful if you put a note in the description as to any such elements.
- How do I submit a site which has already been coded but needs a rework?
- The best way to do this is too ZIP up the files and submit them with the order.
Browsers / Testing
- You mention all major browsers? Is this for both Mac and PC?
- Yes. We develop on both Mac OSX and PC and test on both. We don't support Windows 98 or Mac OS 9.X out of the box, although we ensure graceful degradation via semantic markup. If you have a project which requires these older operating systems please email us.
- Are you able to make my design look good in new browsers such as IE7 on Windows Vista? How about Firefox 3?
- Yes. We include IE7 and FF3 in our browser testing.
- What browsers do you specifically support?
- Generally we test and get the layout looking great in the major browsers including Gecko-based browsers (Firefox, Netscape, Mozilla), KHTML-based browsers (Safari) and Microsoft Internet Explorer 6+.
We make sure that your design works on, look good and looks as close to the design as possible without compromising markup quality on:
- IE 6
- IE 7
- Firefox 3
- Safari 3 +
- Opera 9
For older browsers we make sure the content is accessible but we don't compromise the code by adding hacks to compensate for them.
- What about older browsers?
- We offer a more detailed service for projects which require more in-depth compatibility.
For this we make sure your design works on:
- IE5.01 Win
- IE5.02 Mac
- Netscape 8
We also make sure your design both works on and looks good on:
- IE 5.5
- Firefox 2
- Safari 1.2, 2
- Opera 8
If you require this please email us.
- Does your markup expand elastically with text size increase and decrease?
- Yes. We test our designs to make sure they look good in modern browsers such as Firefox and IE6/7 when viewers increase and decrease the text size.
- I need my site to work specifically in screen readers. Can you help?
- Yes. We have testing facilities to test sites in screen readers including:
- JAWS latest version
- Window Eyes latest version
Out of the box we include basic accessibility markup such giving appropriate markup to the navigation. However if you have specific accessibility requirements please email us.
- Can you make sure my design meets certain accessibility guidelines?
- Yes. If you have certain accessibility requirements please email us. We're experienced in making design compliant with all 508 / DDA / WCAG1.0 level 2 (AA) checkpoints such as:
- 5.6 (abbreviations for header labels),
- 4.3 (identify primary natural language),
- 10.5 (lists o' links marked up as lists),
- 13.6 (skip navigation link - one that works for sighted keyboard-only
users as well as for screen-reader users);
- Can you do a special print style sheet for my site?
- Yes. We enjoy doing style sheets for print. If you'd like to include one please send in a design of how you would like the design to look in print. A print style sheet counts as an extra page.
- Can you XHTMLize my design to send as an email?
- Yes. Unfortunately the latest version of Outlook has limited the design possibilities for email. However we can advise on this. We test emails in the following clients:
- Google Mail / GMail (web-mail)
- Hotmail (web-mail)
- AOL Email (web-mail)
- Apple Mail
- MS Outlook 2000
- MS Outlook 2002/Outlook XP
- MS Outlook 2003
- MS Outlook 2003 (No Content Blocking)
- MS Outlook 2007
- Can you make my site look good on devices other than a computer? How about a mobile phone?
- Yes. If you have specific requirements for other devices please email us. We're experienced in developing markup for a whole range of devices including:
- Mobile devices via the .mobi guidelines
- Entertainment devices such as Sony PSP, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS
Best Practices
- Should I expect "pixel precision"?
- Personally we value forward-thinking designs over pixel precision. We can go beyond simply mirroring your design to make it look the same in a browser as it does in Photoshop. We can enhance your design to make sure it's lean, adaptable and flexible to suit the web medium. However we understand that in many cases there is the requirement for "pixel precision". If this is the case please let us know.
- Do you use microformats?
- Yes. We love microformats and intergrate them when we can. We take great care in thinking about the best way to present your data and adopt the microformats design principals for formats such as hCard, hCalendar, geo, hReview and rel-tag.
- Can you embed my Flash files for me?
- Yes. To ensure your design is web standards compliant we use Javascript to Flash detect and embed your SWF files.
- Do you support sIFR?
- Yes. We're very experienced in sIFR and can support this. You will need to provide the font source files for us to do this.
- Can you implement more advanced JavaScript into my design?
- Yes. We're experienced JavaScript and can provide you a quote if you email the details. We are familiar with the major JavaScript frameworks including:
- moo.fx
- lightbox libraries
- Prototype
- Dojo
- Mochikit
- Yahoo UI Library (YUI)
- jQuery
- We're using ASP.NET. Are you familiar with the markup constraints?
- Yes. Please let us know if you're using ASP.NET so that we avoid using id selectors due to ASP.NET user controls and the dynamically assigned reference ids at runtime.
Payment
- What payment methods do you accept?
-
- PayPal pay via credit or debit card.
- Bank wire to Australia If you are based in Australia, local bank transfer is the preferred payment method. For Australian customers we convert the amount to AUD and add GST. [PREFERRED FOR AUSTRALIA]
- Checks you can post a check in any currency to PO BOX 263, Ormond, VIC, 3204, Australia.
If you cannot pay with any of the above methods please get in touch and we'll work out an alternative method.
- When do I pay?
- We offer a 10% discount if you pay upfront. Otherwise payment is requested when you receive the first version of the XHTMLized design. If you choose this option we will send you an invoice along with the XHTMLized designs. For new customers you need to make payment immediately. For established customers we are happy to offer NET 30 or NET 45. We charge a late payment penalty of 2% per month that the payment is late. You are not allowed to use the XHTMLized design until you have paid for them.
- Do you offer discounts?
- We offer personalized discounts if you have ongoing work. The larger the volume, the larger the discount.
- Do you offer monthly billing?
- Once we've established a relationship with you, were happy to offer monthly billing.
- Do you offer a refund if I'm not happy?
- We're pleased to offer a 100% refund if you're not happy with the quality of the markup. Before we refund we'll do everything we can to make sure your project is successful.
- What currency are the prices on the website?
- All prices are in USD dollars. We are happy to accept any currency supported via PayPal.
Privacy
- My designs are confidential as are the business ideas behind them. Can you keep them private?
- We have no problem with signing an NDA on any project. We won't share project details with anyone.
- I don't want anyone knowing I use XHTMLized! ok?
- XHTMLized is a private service. We won't put your design on our samples page without your permission. We always love when you do give us permission. XHTMLized gets a good amount of traffic so it's a nice site to have a link on. We really love to get testimonials and will proudly put them on the site. If you have strict requirements that the XHTMLizers cannot use the markup in their personal portfolio please include this in the description.
- Will we be able to have access to all of the code/CSS for future changes?
- Yes. All the code (XHTML/CSS/images/JavaScript) ownership and rights belongs to you and you can do anything you like with it.
Revisions
- Do you provide any revisions?
- If you get the files back and you notice there is something not right, we'll revise and revise until it's looking the way it should. If the revisions are a change to the original design or content you sent in, this is out of scope and we'll quote you a nominal price for it.
Delivery Times
- When are you open?
- We are open 24/7. Having an international team means that someone is always around to help out with any enquiry you might have. We each observe our respective countries holidays which means we're open almost everyday of the year.
- When you say days do you mean business days?
- In general no. You can place an order at anytime. However if possible please pre-warn of larger projects, especially ones which run over weekends. We like to know ahead of time who'll be working on the weekend. So if you're planning on sending through 20 pages to do in 1 day on Friday night pre-warning is critical!
- I must have the markup back by a certain time! or I'll turn into a pumpkin!! Can you guarantee it?
- We can't guarantee you'll turn into a pumpkin, as we always get the markup back on time. If you must have the pages back by a specific time please let us know about it. With our team, more than one person can work on the project at the same time which enables us to deliver short turnarounds on projects. However there are physical limitations and if we get an order of 100 pages in 1 day we'll possibly turn into pumpkins ourselves.
